:FIFTEEN: The Cherry Dress

I'm a teeny tiny bit late for KCWC- but I did finish this yesterday. I just didnt get a chance to do all the post sewing guff that goes on with blogging a craft project (photograph, edit, type post).

The insipration behind this dress is a book called 'The Cherry Dress' by Elizabeth Honey (ISBN 9781864488494). I always thought this was one of those books that *I* loved to read to my kids and they tolerated it for my benefit, but Matilda surprised me by picking out cherry fabric at spotlight and asked me to recreate 'THE' cherry dress.

 The story goes like this:

Grandma makes a cherry dress for Sally.

Sally ADORES the dress and wears it all summer. And the summer after (with hems let down and stain covered with a new pocket).

The next summer, alas, it's too small. Sally passes it on to her sister, who wears it for a few summers. Then it gets passed on to the little girl next door- who also wears it with love.

The story follows the cherry dress through a few more little girls and their adventures until...

One day a much older Sally is riding along on her bike when she spots a teddy wearing a familiar dress. The little girl who owns the teddy is a complete stranger to Sally but they have a chat about the cherry dress and its 'story'.

They ask for a photograph to be taken, which Sally sends to her Grandma.

I get tears in my eyes every time I read that book! It's a must have for anyone who makes clothes for their little ones.

I was so happy when Matilda ask for her Mummy to make her a cherry dress. Nawwwww!

As for the dress itself. I used Burda 9608 to make the dress. I've made it before for Elizabeth in pink butterfly fabric

Matilda recently grew into the pink one. It looked so nice on her that I decided to reuse the pattern for the cherry dress.

It's a lovely pattern that comes together really easily. The dress itself has only 4 pieces, so apart from the bias work (which takes a bit of time) it is, conceptually, simple in consruction. I'd suggest a intermediate sewer looking to practice some skills would enjoy this pattern.

I hope I get to see a teddy wearing it in 15 years time!
